What Is Música do Círculo

Nós chamamos de roda de “Música do Círculo” uma sessão de improvisação musical coletiva baseada em ciclos, que usa voz, percussão corporal e movimento como recursos, estruturada a partir de jogos musicais encadeados em fluxo e que carrega princípios da cooperação e do diálogo. Um círculo que gera interação, conexão e criatividade, onde todos são bem-vindos e convidados a se expressar e se relacionar com integridade, presença e afeto.

We call a “Música do Círculo” circle a collective musical improvisation session based on cycles, using voice, body percussion and movement as resources, structured through musical games chained in flow, carrying the principles of cooperation and dialogue. A circle that generates interaction, connection and creativity, where everyone is welcome and invited to express themselves and to relate with integrity, presence and affection.

"Música do Círculo" é também o nome do projeto e da metodologia criada por Pedro Consorte, Ronaldo Crispim e Zuza Gonçalves.

Elements

Movement

Música e movimento estão intimamente relacionados, especialmente quando o corpo é nosso instrumento. Em nossas rodas é comum acontecerem coreografias espontâneas e danças livres, também exploramos muito o movimento pelo espaço e muitas formações espaciais diferentes que afetam a experiência acústica e relacional dos participantes.

Music and movement are intimately related, especially when the body is our instrument. In our circles it is common for spontaneous choreographies and free dances to happen; we also explore movement through space and many different spatial formations that affect the acoustic and relational experience of the participants.

O espírito de jogo interativo e cooperativo é a essência de nossos círculos. Os 8 jogos apresentados nesta apresentação têm infinitas variações, eles fornecem a estrutura musical e relacional da experiência da “Música do Círculo” e nos foram apresentados por Stênio Mendes e Fernando Barba, com exceção do “Circlesong”, apresentado por Bobby McFerrin.

The spirit of interactive, cooperative play is the essence of our circles. The 8 games presented here have infinite variations; they provide the musical and relational structure of the “Música do Círculo” experience and were presented to us by Stênio Mendes and Fernando Barba, with the exception of “Circlesong”, presented by Bobby McFerrin.

Improvisation

Numa sessão de “Música do Círculo” não só a música é sempre criada na hora, mas tudo o que acontece no encontro pode ser improvisado seguindo o fluxo do que o momento pede, levando a momentos inesperados e surpreendentes. A improvisação nos mantém presentes, nos convida a uma escuta profunda e é uma prática naturalmente cooperativa.

In a “Música do Círculo” session not only is the music always created on the spot — everything that happens in the gathering can be improvised, following the flow of what the moment calls for, leading to unexpected and surprising moments. Improvisation keeps us present, invites us into deep listening, and is a naturally cooperative practice.

Nonverbal Communication

Ao fazer música nos comunicamos o tempo todo de forma não verbal, na “Música do Círculo” abraçamos esse princípio e evitamos explicações verbais longas e complexas, nos distanciando do pensamento compulsivo e explorando criativamente outros canais de comunicação e compreensão mais ligados ao corpo e à intuição.

When making music we communicate non-verbally the whole time. In “Música do Círculo” we embrace this principle and avoid long, complex verbal explanations, distancing ourselves from compulsive thinking and creatively exploring other channels of communication and understanding more connected to the body and intuition.

Circle

O Círculo é o símbolo que representa a visão e os valores que a "Música do Círculo" procura cultivar no mundo, um lugar onde todos são vistos e vêem os outros, onde ninguém está acima ou abaixo, em cujo centro cada um acrescenta sua melhor e singular contribuição, onde a música e a relação nos permitem ser uma "comum-unidade" sem deixar de ser quem somos.

The Circle is the symbol representing the vision and values that “Música do Círculo” seeks to cultivate in the world: a place where everyone is seen and sees the others, where no one stands above or below, in whose center each person adds their best and singular contribution, where music and relationship let us be one “common-unity” without ceasing to be who we are.

Contact

O “Contato” está muito presente nas atividades de integração e conexão que costumam acontecer no início dos encontros, criando ambientes inclusivos que convidam o participante a ser quem é, a se abrir para a aventura. É também uma intenção presente quando olhamos nos olhos, damos as mãos, fazemos "high ten” e dançamos juntos.

“Contact” is very present in the integration and connection activities that usually happen at the beginning of gatherings, creating inclusive environments that invite each participant to be who they are and to open up for the adventure. It is also an intention present when we look into each other's eyes, hold hands, high-ten and dance together.

Flow

Na “Música do Círculo” normalmente vivenciamos os diferentes jogos e momentos musicais em uma cadeia sem interrupções, esse é o “fluxo” e ele pode durar de minutos a horas. O fluxo tem vida própria, a energia de cada momento vai se acumulando para o próximo, convidando cada vez mais abertura, escuta e liberdade expressiva.

In “Música do Círculo” we usually live the different games and musical moments in an uninterrupted chain — that is the “flow” — and it can last from minutes to hours. The flow has a life of its own: the energy of each moment accumulates into the next, inviting ever more openness, listening and expressive freedom.

Arrow

Uma pessoa olha para a outra e passa uma palma, quem recebe faz o mesmo e assim por diante, a versão mais simples é passar a palma sem um pulso estabelecido.

One person looks at another and passes a clap; whoever receives it does the same, and so on. The simplest version is passing the clap without an established pulse.

Essência: Passar algo para alguém.

Essence: Passing something to someone.

Games

Refrain & Improv

Alterna-se entre um padrão executado por todos e o improviso de uma pessoa por vez na ordem da roda.

The group alternates between a pattern performed by everyone and one person improvising at a time, in the order of the circle.

Essência: Alternância entre algo fixo e algo livre.

Essence: Alternation between something fixed and something free.

Echoes

Uma pessoa improvisa e em seguida todas as outras repetem, participantes improvisam um por vez na ordem da roda.

One person improvises and right after everyone repeats it; participants improvise one at a time in the order of the circle.

Essência: Imitação.

Essence: Imitation.

Clock

Em roda, cada pessoa no círculo é responsável por bater palma (ou produzir outro som) em uma subdivisão do compasso.

In a circle, each person is responsible for clapping (or producing another sound) on one subdivision of the bar.

Essência: Fragmentar uma ideia musical no círculo.

Essence: Fragmenting a musical idea across the circle.

Circlesong

O líder improvisa no centro, cria padrões complementares para diferentes naipes organizados na roda e rege.

The leader improvises in the center, creates complementary patterns for the different sections arranged around the circle, and conducts.

Essência: Uma pessoa cria toda a música.

Essence: One person creates all the music.

Minimal Sequence

Cada pessoa cria um padrão para si escutando os criados anteriormente, padrões são acrescentados um por vez na ordem da roda.

Each person creates a pattern for themselves while listening to the ones created before; patterns are added one at a time in the order of the circle.

Free Contagion

Cada pessoa canta/toca o que quiser a partir de uma escuta profunda do grupo, não há regentes.

Each person sings or plays whatever they want out of deep listening to the group; there are no conductors.

Essência: Criar livremente escutando os outros.

Essence: Creating freely while listening to the others.

Carousel

Participantes se revezam como regentes/criadores de subgrupos, conduzindo simultaneamente com os líderes dos outros subgrupos.

Participants take turns as conductors and creators of subgroups, conducting simultaneously with the leaders of the other subgroups.
